Vision & Plans for the Future.
The KOALA Project has a vision to:
All funds raised are used to provide assistance in 4 key areas:
1. Income Generation:
The KOALA Project has a strong commitment to ensuring the school become fully self sufficient, and is capable of generating it's own income to keep the school operating. Our major projects since we started in 2010 have been focussed on income generation, for example the school now operates it's own chicken farm with over 400 chickens, producing over 1800 eggs per week that they sell to the market.
2. Health & Safety:
The health and safety of our children and staff is of utmost importance, so when needed The KOALA Project provides assistance for special projects that will improve the safety and health of the School. We errected a safety fence around the school in 2010 and commenced an annual Health Check program in 2013 as well as providing ongoing education and resources to improve nutrition and health.
3. Education:
All our projects are conducted with objective of improving the education of the children of Kilimahewa. It is our ultimate goal to obtain Primary School accreditation from the Tanzanian Government to operate the school as an English Speaking Independent Primary School as well as a Nursery (Kindergarten) School.
The current Tanzania Education system, requires all children to to pass an entrance exam to be accepted into Secondary school. The issue with this is that Goverment Primary Schooling is taught in Swahili, and the secondary exam in in English. As a result Secondary enrolment rates are very low, estimated at 30% for boys and 25% for Women (2009). By providing the children with English based primary education, significantly increases their chances of completing their Secondary education.
4. Orphan Support:
It is our vision for the future to be able to provide ongoing accommodation and education for orphans of Kilimahewa. It is estimated that over 50 children in the Kilimahewa region alone, have been left orphaned by the tragic AIDS epidemic in Africa. Mr Massawe and his wife Suzan have always had a dream to, one day, build a boarding house at the school to ensure these children receive ongoing care and access to education.
We hope commence construction of the school boarding house in 2014/15, once we have succoured our primary school accreditation. The boarding house will be able to provide accommodation for up to 20 local children who have been left orphaned by tragic HIV epidemic.
- Develop Kilimahewa Nursery School into a fully sustainable, Government accredited, English Medium, Nursery & Primary school servicing the children of Kilimahewa, and,
- To provide ongoing accommodation and education for orphans of Kilimahewa.
